Henri Matisse (1869- 1954)
Henri Matisse (December 31, 1869- November 3, 1954) was a French artist, known for his use of color and his fluid, brilliant and original draftsmanship. As a draftsman, printmaker and sculptor, but principally as a painter, Matisse is one of the best known artist of the 20th century. Although he was initially labeled as a Fauve (wild beast), by the 1920s, he was increasingly hailed as an upholder of the classical tradition in French painting. His mastery of the expressive language of color and drawing, displayed in a body of work spanning over a half-century, won him recognition as a leading figure in modern art. Matisse died of a heart attack at the age of 84 in 1954.

Matisse is probably my favorite artist, I admire his commitment to the palette, with Matisee color was always the primary consideration, form and shape were secondary, intended merely to accommodate the visual impact, keep up the good work, cheers.

Always struck me as strange that such a conservative looking chap would be crowned 'king of the wild beasts'! Guess it goes to show that a book can not be judged be their covers, turbulent creative forces swirled within the heart of this artist!

Yep, Matisse looks like such a mild mannered sort of person, who would have thought such creativity dwelt beneath the surface.
