World's Classical Masterpieces - Tchaikovsky

Swan Lake Finale - Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky

Tchaikovsky at Cambridge, 1893.
Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky (May 7, 1840 - November 6, 1893) was a Russian composer of the Romantic era. While not part of the nationalistic music group known as "The Five," Tchaikovsky wrote music which was distinctly Russian: plangent, introspective, with modally- inflected melody and harmony. Tchaikovsky died on November 6, 1893, nine days after the premiere of his Sixth Symphony, the Pathetique.

  1. Mel, what would one actually mean by 'symphony'?

  2. Hi Sangeeta,
Symphony means a long and complex sonata for symphony orchestra. Symphony orchestra is a long orchestra of winds, strings and percussion that plays symphonic works. Thanks and God bless.
