While not part of the nationalistic music group known as "The Five," Tchaikovsky wrote music which was distinctly Russian: plangent, introspective, with modally- inflected melody and harmony. Tchaikovsky died on November 6, 1893, nine days after the premiere of his Sixth Symphony, the Pathetique.

Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarotti Simoni (March 6, 1475 - February 18, 1564) commonly known as Michelangelo, was an Italian Renaissance painter, sculptor, architect, poet and engineer. Despite making few forays beyond the arts, his versatility in the disciplines he took up was of such a high order that he is often considered a contender for the title of the archetypal Renaissance man, along with his rival and fellow Italian Leonardo da Vinci. He died on February 18, 1564 in Rome at the age of 88.

Lost in time in Lake Sebu (South Cotobato, Philippines)

Travelife Magazine Editor at Large Gabby Malvar discovers the hidden paradise of the T’boli tribe.

The countryside unveiled itself incessantly as we pushed onwards down the road, and my eyes traced the horizon and scanned the fields, ever thirsty for scenery and points of interest. My world was green. The stacked rice paddies, however, seemed misplaced: this was not the Cordilleras. Peculiar and out of place as they seemed, appearing in this part of the country, they still afforded a visual treat.

My partner Ginggay and I were en route to picturesque Lake Sebu in South Cotabato, traditional domain of the T’boli minority. Lake Sebu is both the name of the lake and the municipality around the lake.

Were it not for the generosity of friends, the Antonina-Custodios, who provided a Nissan Navarra pick-up truck, we would be covering the distance from General Santos City in a cramped bus or jeepney. This was a welcome luxury. Ginggay manned the steering wheel; I rode shotgun, enjoying the continually changing backdrop. We drove westward along a wide cemented highway, our patience and tolerance ceaselessly tested by motorcycles bearing enough passengers to constitute a small township, antiquated vehicles better displayed in museums and hogging the road at turtle-pace, and utility jeeps with wanton disregard for safety, making U-turns as they pleased along the main thoroughfare. Road trips in the Philippines are exceptionally gratifying provided you survive the harrowing side.

A few kilometers past the town of Surallah, we diverted from the main highway, into a narrower albeit well-maintained road, with sections draped by canopies of leaves and tree branches. Rolling hills flanked the countryside in the distance. The road meandered upward gradually. We knew we were approaching our final destination, 300 meters above.

No signposts announced our arrival or welcomed us. It was the renowned bright red abaca turban upon an elderly woman’s head that indicated to me that we had reached Lake Sebu. The T-boli and Lake Sebu are invariably linked. For 600 years, they have stayed here and their culture and craft—weaving and metalwork primarily—have flourished. Numbering over 60,000, the T’boli are of the lake and land. And the lake and land are theirs.

Face to face with the T’boli

I was lost in the dance.

The beat was muted, originating from taut deerskin stretched over an understated drum, gently pounded by a T’boli mother’s soft hands. Her child, not even ten years old, bounced on one foot to another, spinning leisurely around, yet firmly transfixed on one spot. Bright, colourful beads dangled from her hair, creating monotonic swish, not unlike the sound of rice hurled into space then caught in an abaca basket. Her hands and arms sliced the air in deliberate and precisely choreographed movements. I wasn’t certain whether she followed the rhythm or dictated the pulse.

Mother and child were garbed in ancestral dress, a signature blend of colours and intricate patterns seemingly pulled from a prism and woven into T’nalak cloth, further adorned with an elaborate yet controlled mayhem of rings, necklaces, bells, and anklets.

This was T’boli culture in full display. I patted the child on the head, charmed by the slight imperfection of her eyes.

The T’boli are a fascinating people whose heritage and culture has remained intact. Perhaps the most visually arresting of all indigenous tribes in the Philippines, one could even accuse them of vanity. They are preoccupied – almost obsessed – by all things aesthetically pleasing. Which is a good thing: their zeal is evident in their intricate, elaborate metalwork and textiles, crafted from techniques handed down through generations.

The T’boli are found everywhere around the lake, whether on the roadside, or in the Saturday markets where they display wares for sale. They are hard to miss, and if you overlook the colorful garb, listen. The jingling of bells heralds their arrival.

Time has come to a full stop in Lake Sebu. For that reason you come here because you seek contact with an unblemished past and an innocence intact, perhaps to remind you of when you were a lot less jaded and when you liked yourself a little more.

At ease in a dream-like place

There was no single vantage point to take in the lake in its entirety. We followed its contours, occasionally stopping to glimpse its qualities – clusters of huts on stilts, restrained carabaos grazing close the water’s edge, or the lonely silhouette of a paddler gliding over the fluid plane. Yet each viewpoint offered a different feature. There was no postcard shot, and for that, the possibilities were as numerous as the vantage points. Discovering the lake was a personal experience uniquely one’s own.

Close to the furthest point southwest, a tower provided an elevated view of the lake and the jagged mountains beyond. It entailed clambering up three flights over creaking floorboards and ladders. Fishpens inundated the glassy surface of the great, tranquil pond. From above, crossword puzzle-like shapes, from the formations and placements of bamboo spokes were discernible. Beyond the lake, a collection of peaks beckoned to be trekked and explored.

We raced to the opposite end of the watery basin to catch the sunset. Twilight arrived carrying early evening breezes that formed clouds of mist as it flirted with the lake’s waters. This was not a place defined by activities and a list of things to do. No jet skis or kite boards were present to mar the tranquillity. Silence and contemplation was the main preoccupation here and it filled up the day completely. We gave in to meditative musings as the mountains and the wide sky watched their reflections in the magnificent looking glass.

How do you capture the essence of a place in a photograph? To experience Lake Sebu and its magical allure, you need to be there, not merely to perceive it as a static, frozen image on matte paper.

Bingeing on Tilapia

I stared at the menu of one of the numerous lakeside restaurants, knowing that a more intimate encounter with the lake could be had over a meal. Tilapia was the primary offering but the choices revolved around its preparation – sinugba (grilled), con chicharon (pork crackling), or sweet and sour, among many others. We decided on the sinugba and con chicharon. Amidst mouthfuls of rice and fish soaked in my sawsawan (dipping sauce), a mixture of calamansi (Philippine citrus), suka (vinegar), toyo (soy sauce), and spiked with dinikdik na sili (crushed chilli), we savored the lake. Eating by ample handfuls, we partook of the lake’s bounty, toasting it and washing it down with calamansi juice -- a communion of sorts – thereby making our experience much more complete.

Into space

Strung between two platforms on the opposite ends of a chasm, a steel cable spanned the gap, two hundred meters short of a full kilometer. I was on the zip line’s receiving end, awaiting one raring-to-go “flyer,” strapped securely to a harness attached to the line. On the launch point, a guide radioed in the send-off and after a hefty shove, gravity took over and the spread-eagled rider hurtled across the divide. The squeaks of the spinning pulley were drowned by the shrieks of an ecstatic passenger. Thirty-two seconds later, Ginggay turned up after tearing at speeds of up to 60kph. The excitement on her face spoke volumes. “I want to do it again!”

I had crossed the rift earlier, albeit more liesurely. I preferred images to thrills, scenery to speed. I halted midway and took photos, the Sony Alpha’s variable angle screen coming in quite handily. I hung the awhile, simply enjoying the panoramas and the anxious thrill of being suspended over 80 meters in the air, swinging above the tree line.

This was neither the longest, highest, nor fastest zip line in the country (although it does not lag behind). What distinguishes this is the view it affords the flyer. Other zip lines only fly over canopies, and a canopy is a canopy is a canopy. One tires of it. No other zip line in the country can fly you over waterfalls and follow the drop at close proximity from its source. Three of the renowned Seven Falls, a series of waterfalls cascading from a single source, can be clearly seen from this unique perspective.

Immediately after leaving the base, you soar over falls number two, the highest and most dramatic of the seven, experiencing its power and grandeur even as you move away from it. Two-thirds of the way, falls number four and five materialize. Plummeting through notches the rock, gushing streaks of white cut through dense forest cover.

A second zip line brought us to the base of the second waterfall where a thundering boom and frail spray says nothing of the force that formed the deep pool below it. A motorcycle-ride and a short walk later, we were soaking relaxing our weary limbs in the gentler waters of falls number one.

Lost in time

After loading our packs into the truck, we took a long last look at the lake. Lake Sebu will not be free from modernism for long. Change will come. It always does. The zip line will attract more tourists. I wondered whether the fine balance between development and tradition would be kept. Will it be able to keep its traditions and innocence as modernity encroaches? For now, I was fully caught in the time warp, mesmerized as I was in the little girl’s dance. Nothing else mattered.

“Home, James.” I teased Ginggay after reclining in my seat.

My incidental chauffer gamely smiled and started the engine. A few revs later, our time machine was primed for the journey back to the future. I knew full well that Lake Sebu would still be calling out to me long after I was gone.

Revisiting the galleon trade

The Galeon Andalucia finally arrived in the Philippines on Oct. 6, 2010 after a day of delay due to strong winds encountered from Hong Kong. It was docked at Pier 13 in South Harbor, Manila.

The history of the galleon trade traced its roots in the 16th century when Spain embarked on a worldwide exploration. It made Manila the most important port in Asia, bridging Asia to Europe and the Americas. On Oct. 8, 1565 , Fray Andres de Urdaneta discovered the tournaviaje, which was the return route from the Philippines to America. It proved that the world was not flat and could be navigated in two directions.

The Philippines is this year’s host of the Dia del Galeon Festival, which UNESCO institutionalized at its General Conference in Paris last year. The festival commemorates the glorious past of the galleon trade, which made the world a global village.

Filipinos residing in Luzon can visit the 51-meter-long replica on Oct. 7-8, 2010 from 8:00 am-12:00 nn and 1:00-4:00 pm. On Oct. 9, it will only be opened from 8:00 am until 12:00 noon.

Thirty high school students from Aurora will be joining the Spanish crew for the Viaje del Galeon, a four-day educational trip from Manila to Cebu on Oct. 9-12.

A taste of Albay’s unique ‘sinigang sa buko’

DARAGA, ALBAY — Who says all dishes in Bicol need to be spicy? At Gotohan sa Cagsawa, I had a taste of a somewhat unique version of a quintessential Filipino dish.

Sinigang sa buko was created by brothers Beting and Zhar Solomon as they were starting up their gotohan in 1996.

According to Michelle, Beting’s daughter, her father and uncle wanted to present something unique for the tourists in Cagsawa ruins who may not be inclined to spicy dishes the province is famous for, like the Bicol Express and laing.

I love both dishes she mentioned but I can vouch that it’s really hard to eat something spicy after walking under the heat of the sun and THEN sweat some more.

Good thing someone selling souvenirs recommended their restaurant, located on the left side of the Cagsawa ruins facing the famous Mayon Volcano.

“Not everyone who visits here wants spicy after a long walk from the ruins. We also needed to have an ‘attraction’ because of competition among neighboring small establishments,” says Michelle.

Through recommendations from customers, it has become one of their most requested dish. You can choose from blue marlin, shrimp, pork and beef for your sinigang sa buko.

I picked blue marlin and I was not disappointed. Unlike the usual sinigang, it is a bit sweet because of the buko juice that blends with the tamarind and ginger. Imagine yourself drinking buko juice with its white flesh while also enjoying the blue marlin.

Michelle shares that although Mayon is still placed under threat of eruption, tourists keep coming to see it. In 2006, she recalls, they were badly affected by typhoon Reming but life must go on for them but small businesses are able to rebuild anew.

She also shares that because it has always been recommended by other people, most neighboring food establishments also imitate their recipe but they don’t feel bothered since locals would know who made it first.

If going to Albay seems like a stretch, Michelle gladly shared this sinigang sa buko recipe.

Ingredients:
tomatoes
onion
ginger
iodized salt
buko juice (with the white flesh)
tamarind
fish (beef or pork is also an option)

Boil the tomatoes with ginger and onion. When it reaches boiling point, add the buko juice and its white flesh. Add fish and enough of the tamarind to desired sour taste.

I have never seen a prolific and compleat contemporary artists such as Tommy Thompson. With so much fantastic works of art that he churned out all these years, you can not help but be amazed at the greatness of his works which spread out to all kinds of classification. I have featured just a scratch on the surface of his marvelous works which I shall surely feature again in some future time. Although his artworks are quite expensive as compared to other upcoming contemporary artists, they are worth all the money that the art lover will pay for his exquisite and fine works of arts. Bio

Over thirty years ago I started my exploration of techniques and use of color both in printmaking and in painting. While first at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and then at Washington University in St. Louis I learned printmaking techniques including lithography, block printing and etching and was later introduced to collagraphy. Coupled with an intensive curiosity about the printmaking techniques came a great interest in exploring spatial relationships and volume with my oil painting work.

Using the technique of monotype is truly rewarding since it combines my love of painting and printmaking. I start out with a drawing and place it under a piece of plexiglass. Then I paint the plexiglass using the drawing as my guide. Finally, a piece of dampened paper is placed over the painted surface and is run through the press. Because this process is so spontaneous I never really know what to expect. Often I am pleasantly surprised. Other times I may have to tweak the piece a bit with some watercolor washes.

My approach to collagraphs is entirely different. I don’t know anyone creating collagraphs in the same way. I have been modifying my process for thirty years and continue finding new ways to do things. The process is quite involved. Here is the basic gist. Once I come up with a design I transfer that drawing to my first plate, usually illustration board. Then a collage is created within the design gluing various textures to the plate. The plate is then inked with black ink, wiped, and a dampened piece of paper is placed on the plate and it is run through the press. The next step is to create a second plate onto which I glue canvas and transfer the same design. I mix my colors and cover the entire plate by rubbing the ink into the canvas with tarlatan (tarlatan is a strong, absorbent cloth). I place the black and white on the press and carefully place (register) the color plate on top and then run that through the press. Most recently I have been printing the color twice on each print to achieve the richness in color I seek. This is more work, but is usually worth the extra time. With the print work complete, I often do a bit of hand coloring since registration is not always perfect.

Over the past 15 years I have exhibited my work in numerous major cities and am included in many corporate collections. A sampling of the corporations that have purchased my work include: Allied Signal Corp., Cigna, Citicorp, Marriott Corp. and PepsiCo, Inc.

Artist Bio

Linda Blondheim lives in Gainesville, Florida and works primarily in acrylics and oils. Linda is a listed artist with Art Price, Ask Art The American Artist Bluebook, and Marquis Who's Who in American Art. She has a museum history in Alabama, Florida, and Georgia and is gallery represented in Florida, and Alabama.

Linda's work is often described as painterly or representational painting. Sometimes she is referred to as a representational expressionist or American Impressionist. She enjoys plein air painting Fall through Spring, during the mild Florida climate, and enjoys traveling throughout the South to capture the beauty found in each state. Some of Linda's work is done en plein air; but, she also enjoys working from plein air studies and photographs to complete larger works in the studio. Her paintings are found in private and corporate collections throughout the United States.

Linda earned a BFA from the University of Tampa, studied post Bac at University of South Florida and has been painting for 30 years. She is a co-founding member of Plein Air Florida, Plein Air Georgia, Alabama Plein Air Artists and Fresh Air.

Earth is one of the four classical elements , which represents the realms of the cosmos wherein all things exist and whereof all things consist. The diversified landscapes along with their multitude of layers; colors , the components comprising it , the environment that swathes and enfolds it and the forces affecting it. This will be an extensive theme which I will portray through my Digital Abstract Art. I will begin with the "Hues Of Earth", wherein the Medley Of Hues begins to unfold.

Air is often seen as a universal power or pure substance. An element connected to the soul and the breath of life. The colors of Air are the colors of spring, bright sky blue, the white of wispy clouds and the yellow of the rising sun. It is also the gentle summer breeze and wind that can turn destructive. In my Graphic Designs the various colors and properties of air are depicted along with it's power to create and destroy life.

Fire is commonly associated with energy, assertiveness and passion. An active force that has passion to create and animate things. When on one hand it provides comfort on the other it's flames are capable of total destruction. Employing Digital techniques I will depict it's occurrence , it's containment , it's flickering and flashing into a blaze revealing it's supremacy.

Water is one of the most vital elements of life. Its occurrence, be it in the form of springs or oceans, rain, rivers or streams; its significance cannot be overlooked.
In my graphic designs I have projected its infinite vastness, motion and beauty, not forgetting how crucial it is for our very existence.

Digital Abstract Art most commonly refers to art created on a computer in digital form. It can be purely computer generated such as fractals, and algorithmic art or taken from another source such as scanned photographs or images drawn using vector graphics software. The Digital graphic designs that I have created so far have been constructed using mostly my original paintings of landscapes, to which I have incorporated digital imagery creating multilayer ed , textured abstract images. The hues and colors reflected are mostly the one's I originally started with, improvising on tones where needed. In some I have made use of scanned images and photographs pasting them to create custom effects and a more realistic picture pulsing with life. There are several advantages attached to Digital abstract art. Using high resolution high quality images can be printed. There are no concerns about the paint drying up or clean up. Errors made are easy to rectify and storage and inventory costs are eliminated. In short we can say that in employing digital techniques one can let imagination run wild producing effects which are often surprising.

When painting conventional art I use Acrylic paints which are made from pigment that has been suspended in an acrylic polymer emulsion. Extremely versatile, fast drying and can be used straight from the tube or thinned with water and used like watercolors. The amount of drying time can be altered with the aid of extenders or retarders making it possible to blend colors more easily. Once dried they are also highly resistant to water which helps protect and preserve the final piece.

ABOUT ME:

Seven years ago my nine year old daughter and I decided to brighten up our kitchen by adding a mural; she left soon after while I completed my first painting. The result sparked an unrecognized awareness and what commenced as a hobby soon developed into my passion. With the aid of Acrylics I enjoy capturing the vibrant hues found in landscapes and seascapes .

There are great difference between art therapy and the life of art showrooms, yet the pictures look alike- only names of the artists radiate other authority. I'm not going to discuss the above riddle or to dive into specializations, just welcome you to the wonderland of beauty. The blog don't discuss the healing problems but depicts the art therapy from the viewpoint of its participants. I welcome you to glimpse at our diaries. Critique

Tomas Karkalas' works fall under a different category than the usual art paintings. His work is what he calls art therapy and is more of an expression of the soul. Art here is taken in the context of a healing therapy that embodies the holistic approach to human expression. His works are not only works of art but longings of one's soul to find expressions and freedom in the art form. His works are neither named (although some of them are) nor formally categorized (categories are by human experience) and he uses different materials in his works of art. The colors of his works are so vibrant and expressive. They burst forth in a cascading landscape of both colors and free form. There is no limit to this kind of art form for who can limit the expression of one's soul as it attains mastery over its fragile body through the art of healing therapy?

I live in Northern California right in the heart of Gold Country. My home is just miles from where apples are grown, wine is made & gold was first discovered. I was born in South Carolina & spent my early childhood there before moving to Japan , Arizona & finally California. I'm still a Southern girl at heart. My travels add to my varied taste in art. There isn't any style that I don't like! I love painting angels, mermaids & mermaid angels.

My art is inspired by sweet things in my life, my loving family , my friends and sometimes by my goofy sense of humor. My life is filled with music, artful things & loving people.

I have enjoyed painting for 37 yrs. I am basically self taught but have studied art on my own & taken classes. After losing my job in the mortgage industry I decided to devote myself to my art.

In addition to my love for painting, I am a crafter. I learned to crochet at age 7. I was mesmerized by Japanese sparkly yarn! This was the beginning of a lifetime of crafting! I enjoy crochet, knitting, sewing, embroidery & other needlework, perfume making, cake decorating, wood crafts, clay work & decorative painting. I must admit that I ignored the works of Campbell Jane when I first saw her works in the early stages of this blog's existence. But when I took a second hard look at her art works, I was astounded by the quality of her masterpieces. I was reminded of the great renaissance works of Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael. My favorite is her Brown Eyed Angel. It was love at first sight. I am always reminded of the Madonna works of the great masters by the sheer quality, color and vividness of her work. I highly recommend her art works to all art lovers and I would give her a very high rating of 9.5 in a scale of 1 to 10. She has a great fondness for angels and mermaids a testament to the creative spirit in her soul.

Texas Hill Country Painter

I paint with bold, clean strokes, thick with rich, sometimes surprising, colors that express what I see and feel when painting. My hope is that in the end I have engaged the emotions those who view my work.

I begin long before I pick up my brushes using design and composition principles to outline the work. I then paint with abandon and joy. The resulting work shows my personal application of impressionism with a minimalist quality.

Often inspiration comes from what I see walking on my ranch on the historically rich, brushy edge of the Texas Hill Country. Here daily, I encounter constant contrasts and variety in texture and color - the dichotomy of harmony and discord; lushness and barrenness; serenity and energy.

My challenge is to show the complexity of creation by painting intimate, personal portraits of nature. Whether choosing a landscape or still life, close observation reveals the ordinary as extraordinary.

Encaustic art?

What is it?

The name encaustic comes from the Greek for ” burnt in ” …..

It is claimed that the art of encaustic wax painting is at least over 2000 years old and that it was practised by the Ancient Greeks, Romans and Egyptians. Since it has lasted, in some cases, over 2000 years it is considered a very durable form of Art. Around the world there are examples of portraits which have been painted on wood.

Examples of encaustic tomb portraits from Roman Egypt bear witness to the durability of the medium, which is thought to have been widely used in ancient times. Pliny describes the process in which hot liquid colors were applied to the wall by means of heated irons. It is believed that the waxes used to be heated in containers over a charcoal fire until molten and then applied to the wood with brushes or perhaps heated spatulas.

Nowadays, artists have the use of modern technology and thus are able to produce beautiful works of art with electric tools.

True encaustic painting is produced through a process in which the coloured wax is permanently ‘burned’ into an absorbant backing such as plaster, canvas or some woods. However, today, the technique of laying wax on a non absorbant support is generally regarded as encaustic art.

The amazing attribute of using the molten wax is that whenever the hot implement such as an iron touches it, the wax will melt and thus can be re-worked. So, you can alter the image until you are satisfied.

The waxes can be of many types. However, they are usually specially formulated to provide art quality colours in a safe non toxi form which is designed to be used when melted. This wax melts at 40 degrees Fahrenheit ot just over 60 degrees Centigrade. The most popular for the beginner is wax made into manageable blocks or sticks. Otherwise, wax can be melted, different pigments added according to requirements etc.

The main tool is the painting or encaustic iron. The base plate is used to smooth and texture the wax whilst the edge can be scraped or made to slide through the medium. Again, the tip of the iron can be used to draw in details. Encaustic art painting card is specially impregnated and enables the wax to slide around the surface without allowing too much absorbtion. The card resists heat damage and is tough and flexible.

Other tools can include an encaustic art stylus, scribing tools, hot air guns. Whatever comes to hand.

Other supports can be used creating different effects such as wood, fabric, plastic or metal.

It is an exciting medium which is not difficult master has limitless boundaries. Only the imagination can stop you!

I must admit that this is the first time I heard of Encaustic art and I am very excited about it. It is a revolutionary way of artistic endeavor using molten wax to paint your desired subject. Although this has been used for over 2,000 years now, it is now widely propagated by Ms. Pat O'Neill with outstanding results. Her works are simply fantastic and have the quality and flair of works by the masters. It is to her genius that she can get carried away in molding the desired patterns and forms in her masterworks. The Aceo cards are also very recent forms of art that were used before in cigarette packs and baseball cards. All art connoisseur should take advantage of the very cheap prices of these artworks before they become widely accepted and their prices will rocket to sky high.

My artwork is inspired by realistic subjects which I then abstract or stylise. I particularly enjoy using buildings and plants. I may use photos or my drawings-often computer drawn ones- as a basis, but will then change the colours and add details from imagination or memory, or simply just use the latter to construct a picture. I love taking a quick glance at a scene and simplifying what is in reality very complicated, often by placing a mental "frame" around it -a skill etched on my memory from City and Guilds Embroidery courses. I also enjoy making fantasy artwork, again from my imagination or what is my idea of characters from myth, legend and stories.

I work mainly in watercolour-paint and pencil, felt and gel pens, coloured pencils, inks. I sometimes add texture in the form of a magazine cutting, or other papers or threads/fabric etc. My cats enjoy my art and will help by drinking excess paint flavoured water, sitting on a painting to keep it warm, and grabbing my hand or brush to just make a mark where they see fit. I don't think anyone buying my work would want a subtle cat-hair texture however, so I carefully remove this before offering it for sale!

I would like people to enjoy my art in the sense of seeing a different way of viewing things, and experiencing hopefully the atmosphere and mood that I'm trying to convey.
